Leno move may be good for NBC, but not viewers
9 Dec 2008 at 10:56am
NBC would like you to believe that its strange scheme to install Jay Leno in a weeknight show at 10 p.m. is a bold stroke of prime-time genius. Don't fall for it. With this move, a once-dominant network is waving the white flag of surrender. By asking Leno to take the ball and run with the 10 p.m. slot Monday through Friday, the beleaguered Peacock is essentially admitting that it no longer has the resources, the innovative know-how or the brainpower to produce quality late-night dramas.

Pop Picks Special Edition: The top 10 singles of 2008
9 Dec 2008 at 10:04am
1. Estelle feat. Kanye West "American Boy" The British pop starlet Estelle delivers an agreeably purring vocal, but she doesn't have enough presence to fill out the song's projected swagger. Like few others, Kanye does. Who better to play the blustering but insecure Yankee than the Louis Vuitton Don? He musters his trademark panache, humor, and slick rhymin', turning this radiant, updated-disco earworm into another breezy victory lap for the king of 21st century pop. - Barry Lenser
Male Call: The boyfriend, the family and what you should do
9 Dec 2008 at 10:04am
Q: I had been dreading taking my new boyfriend to Thanksgiving to meet my family, because they can be pretty wild. It's not that I'm embarrassed by them, but I know it can be a little intimidating, with four brothers and one sister, all of whom have kind of a relaxed attitude about things, shall we say. I know the joking around is all in fun, but I'm pretty sure at least one boyfriend in the past has checked out after meeting my family. Anyway, we ended up missing Thanksgiving, but now the Christmas holidays are coming up, and I don't think I can avoid it this time. Any suggestions on how to get through this with boyfriend still intact? - Meghan
When only a gift with an inside joke will doÂ…
9 Dec 2008 at 10:04am
The jolly fat man in red has it made; he only has to deal with one list each year with two kinds of people on it, the naughty and nice. But the rest of us don't have it as simple as Santa. Instead, each holiday, our gift lists include relatives, co-workers, party hosts, the occasional probation officer, and first and second-tier acquaintances. To manage all these people, normal folks without a cadre of elves to do the shopping have to break it down between mandatory verse optional, personal verse easy.
Cornhusker, kid shucker, whichever
9 Dec 2008 at 3:09am
Nebraska (that's one of the rectangular states out west known for corn and, well, corn) has been in the news a lot lately because its "safe haven" law, as written, allowed people to drop off not just unwanted newborns, but even surly teenagers, for someone else to take care of. Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman was led to call a news conference in which he actually pleaded: "Please don't bring your teenager to Nebraska."
Juliana Hatfield's book and music triumph over fame, anorexia
9 Dec 2008 at 3:08am
One of the more desperately humorous turns in Juliana Hatfield's recently published memoir, "When I Grow Up," deals with fame - or, more exactly, the quickest available exit from it. It outlines the singer's attempts to get out of her contract with Atlantic Records. The label initially had managed to bring Hatfield's indie-rock renown closer to the pop mainstream. But in its corporate hunger for a hit single, Atlantic refused to release what would have been her third album for the label, a doomed 1997 project called "God's Foot." So Hatfield wanted out.
Putting the ‘fun' in fundamentalism
8 Dec 2008 at 3:12pm
A guy wearing a long black, gabardine coat, a black hat, white fringes outside his pants and full beard walks into a comedy club and looks out into a sea of Jewish faces. "Is it warm in here," he asks from the microphone, "or am I the only one dressed for Poland in the 1700s?"

'The Dark Knight' hovers high above newest Blu-ray titles
8 Dec 2008 at 6:36am
"The Dark Knight" (Warner, 2008, $35.99), the best Batman movie ever made and easily one of the top films of the year, leads the list of this week's Blu-ray releases. The high-definition DVD format with its flawless picture and dynamic sound makes for a memorable viewing experience on any home theater system. Making it even more special is that the film shifts back and forth between regular letterbox to full widescreen IMAX images. Rather than being a distraction, the merging of the two formats greatly enhances the presentation.

A good year to get back to basics of giving gifts
5 Dec 2008 at 3:08am
"I don't want anything for Christmas this year," my youngest daughter unselfishly announced last week. "Â ... except a digital camera." This may be the year we all need to get back to the basics of Christmas giving. Here are some gifts of hope and health:
'Cadillac Records'
4 Dec 2008 at 11:01pm
Too fragmented and episodic to deliver much drama, "Cadillac Records" still satisfies as an amiable amble through a rich chapter of American pop culture. From the late '40s through the early '60s, Chicago's Chess Records was a hotbed of no-nonsense blues that gave us Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf, Etta James and Willie Dixon. It was also the home of Chuck Berry and as such has a claim to being the birthplace of rock 'n' roll.

Why Tina Fey Had to Get All Tarted Up
4 Dec 2008 at 7:53pm
Like most of America, I've got a ginormous girl crush on Tina Fey. 30 Rock is among the best, smartest, bravest, and most honest shows on TV, not to mention snort-Coke-thru-your-schnoz funny. I really didn't think Fey would pull it off, and was surprised...
Mavericks find groove
4 Dec 2008 at 3:12pm
Some folks say Rick Carlisle resembles comedian Jim Carrey. The Dallas Mavericks coach's dry sense of humor and understated presence make his manner anything but manic. But don't mistake his low-key demeanor for lack of passion.
Grammy Nominees Not Terrible?
4 Dec 2008 at 2:56pm
As everyone knows, the Grammys are dumb. I've mocked the ceremony (and also an imagined ceremony in my brain) as well as the tendency of the lists of nominees to look like a stoned 80-year-old decided them. So, granted, my expectations are very low, but a...

YOU LOVED LAST YEAR'S SO MUCH, we decided to do it again. While we work as hard on Tabloid as we do on any other issue of VIBE, it's an extra-fun issue to make. And this year it was filled with even more high spirits because we were producing it as Senator Barack Obama became President-Elect Barack Obama (see page 57). So even though the Tabloid Issue functions as our year-end wrap up, we hope you'll agree that it's jam-packed with the new and exciting energy I believe is in store fo...
Names in the news
4 Dec 2008 at 12:53pm
Jennifer Aniston hasn't lost her sense of humor even though she is ticked over the flurry of tabloid reports that she is pregnant. "It's hysterical," the former "Friends" star tells Entertainment Weekly. "It's almost going to take away the fun from actually being able to say one day, 'I'm pregnant.'"

AUSTIN, Texas - President Lyndon B. Johnson called Sen. Edward Kennedy the day after brother Robert Kennedy was assassinated to offer condolences and assistance to the grieving family. "Ted, I know what a burden you bear, but your shoulders are broad," Johnson said in a three-minute conversation on June 6, 1968, that was recorded and released Thursday by the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas.

'Nobel Son'
4 Dec 2008 at 7:02am
"The truth is, good and bad are not so absolute," the narrator of "Nobel Son" tells us. And maybe he's got a point, at least when it comes to this movie. "Nobel Son" is not good. Nor is it bad. It exists, instead, somewhere in the middle ground of interesting enough to hold one's attention without actually providing any fresh, sensible or nonderivative developments.
