Maldivians fear the encroachment of a rising global sea level. The Island Kingdom of the Maldives off southern India, one of the lowest lying countries in the world, is under threat from the effects of climate change. It was the first country to sign the 1997 Kyoto climate protocol and is closely following current climate negotiations after talks in Poland at the end of last year.
